Share a mouse and keyboard between all units

Mouse Without Borders, a Microsoft Garage program, removes the parameters set by your computer, and allows your mouse to navigate freely from one PC to another. Through this software, up to four computers can sync into one unit, creating an environment where you can navigate, type, and share files easily.

“The Garage” is Microsoft’s company-wide program that “encourages grass roots invention, tinkering, ideas, and incubation of projects” during off-hours. Most of these projects remain internal or ship as part of a bigger Microsoft product. Mouse Without Borders, however, is the exception to this 99.9 percent rule: it’s its own program, available as a 1.1MB download—free to the public.

To understand Mouse Without Borders, think of it as a multi-monitor setup—only each of those monitors has its own dedicated OS and files, and you’re able to move seamlessly between them. Being that this is a Microsoft product, Mouse Without Borders is a Windows-only utility—and will likely stay that way. That being said, the setup is easy: make sure the PCs you want to connect are on the same local area network (a wired connection works best), and download Mouse Without Borders onto each system. The program will guide you through step by step to sync your computers as one harmonious unit.
